Abstract
Security and privacy are critical challenges in the rapidly evolving metaverse, which spans a variety of immersive applications, including virtual worlds, augmented reality, and lifelogging technologies. We present a systematic review of research published from 2013 to 2024, focusing on security and privacy concerns within the metaverse. We explore the types of studies conducted, the properties emphasized, the research strategies utilized, and the scope of their evaluations. Our review highlights the growing body of work in this area while uncovering significant gaps, including a lack of attention to backend infrastructures, interoperability, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and scalability concerns.
