Abstract
This dataset includes the raw data and analyzed data for an IEEE TvCg article:
Trust in visualization has emerged as a key research topic as visualizations increasingly permeate modern media and life. Empirical work indicates that the design of a visualization can influence trust, but it remains unclear how specific design factors affect trust. The two crowdsourced studies reported on in this paper explore how two common design factors—semantic color congruence and uncertainty representation—impact map trust and map reading. Our analysis suggests that participants’ trust and map reading were largely unaffected by changes in color congruence. However, participants who viewed maps repesenting uncertainty had significantly lower self-reported map trust, map reading accuracy, and map reading confidence than participants viewing maps without uncertainty representation. These results are consistent across stimuli that vary in scale, data pattern, and topic. Additionally, we found that perceived risk functions as a mediating variable for the relationship between uncertainty and map trust. These findings not only provide empirical evidence for previously proposed theoretical frameworks of trust in visualization, but also suggest preliminary design recommendations for using congruent colors and including uncertainty in maps.
This repository contains data, analysis files, and other supplemantary materials related to the article "Uncertainty Representation and Cultural Color Congruence in Visualization Design: Impacts on Trusting and Reading Thematic Maps".
There are five folders in this repository.
- The "SPSS Output" folder contains the SPSS output files from the statistical analysis conducted for Experiments 1 and 2.
- The "Misc Data" folder contains the processed pretest data and the excel sheet breaking down the dependent variables and mediators by condition then by covariates (scale, topic, and data pattern). It also includes the results from the exploratory ANOVA tests.
- The "Experiment 1 Analysis" folder contains the SPSS file used to conduct analysis and the excel sheet containing the processed data for Experiment 1.
- The "Experiment 2 Analysis" folder contains the SPSS file used to conduct analysis and the excel sheet containing the processed data for Experiment 2.
- The "Stimuli Development" folder contains two folders, each of which have all the individual stimuli used in Experiments 1 and 2. It also contains the file "Map Composition.xlsx" that outlines how many map units are in each condition and data class.
