2023 Dataset Upload Contest: $20,000 in Cash Prizes

Submit Your Entry: August 1 - October 31, 2023

Global Climate Change Dataset Upload Contest

The 2023 Dataset Upload Contest has concluded. Entries are now closed. Thank you to all the participants.

IEEE’s mission is to advance technology for the benefit of humanity, and today, climate change is one of the most significant threats to humanity. This is why IEEE DataPort is focused on making research in this area available so the global technical community can do what it does best – innovate for the greater good. To that end, IEEE DataPort is hosting a dataset upload contest specifically for research focused on evaluating the impact of and finding solutions for climate change.

This dataset upload contest is designed to encourage authors and researchers to bring their climate change research to the forefront of the global technical community. Anyone who uploads a qualifying dataset to IEEE DataPort between August 1 at 12:00 am EDT and October 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm EST, will have the opportunity to enter the 2023 dataset upload contest for a chance to win one of three cash prizes:

  • First place: $10,000
  • First runner up: $5,000
  • Second runner up: $5,000

Winners will be selected based on the value and impact of research data in supporting global solutions to climate change, as determined by a panel of IEEE volunteers, as well as completeness of the entry, including usability of data files and instructions, complete metadata, detailed abstract, and imagery.

Topics of the submitted research datasets may include, but are not limited to, greenhouse gas emissions, changing weather patterns, ocean health, sea levels, water scarcity, flooding, saltwater intrusion, wildfires, polar ice measurements, and impact on specific populations. Data may be focused on understanding the science of climate change or developing solutions for climate change.

When uploading either a standard or an open access climate change related dataset to IEEE DataPort during this time, users need to review and agree to the official rules of the contest and select the Climate Change/Environmental category to enter the contest.

  • Datasets uploaded as data competitions are not eligible for the contest
  • Any dataset format may be used, including but not limited to zip, gz, csv, json, txt, sql, xml, tsv, xls, xlsx, mp3, gif, jpg, png, mp4, mpg, yaml, dat, mat, and fig.
  • Entries must include complete metadata, a full abstract, custom image, detailed instructions, and usable dataset files
  • Datasets must be published on IEEE DataPort.
  • Dataset files should either be related to a research (a published or planned paper) or provide value to the research community
  • Individuals must agree to the official rules
  • Individuals may submit multiple datasets, each serving as a distinct entry
  • Previous dataset upload contest winners are not eligible to win
  • Individuals are eligible to win in only one of the three prizes in this contest
  • Contest registrants are encouraged to promote their dataset on personal and organizational social media channels
  • Contest registrants are encouraged to upload scripts or code with their dataset

How to Win

A panel of IEEE volunteers will select the top datasets based on the value and impact of research data in supporting global solutions to climate change and completeness of the entry, including usability of data files and instructions, complete metadata, detailed abstract, and imagery.
