Abstract
This paper proposes a reduced switch count WEtype inverter topology that employs one DC source, nine IGBTs, and one AC-switch comprising of two antiparallel IGBTs, and two capacitors. It is capable of generating 1.5 times boosted 13- level output voltage and employs modified Nearest Level Control (NLC), which considers both zero states. An algorithm based on redundant states controls the voltage across the auxiliary DClink at Vdc/2. The paper presents a detailed mathematical model of the circuit and compares the inverter with other recently introduced 13-level inverter topologies on various parameters. The proposed topology shows its efficacy in working on different modulation indexes. Aside, a 7-level operation is possible even after the removal of the AC-switch. The inverter requires a single voltage sensor despite employing two capacitors, which reduces the inverter’s overall cost. The simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the effectiveness of the WE-type inverter topology.
