Abstract

Bluetooth contact traces from shop employees of a shopping mall over six days.

This is a dataset of real-world Bluetooth contact data colected from shop employees of a shopping mall over six days.

date/time of measurement start: 2012-06-22

date/time of measurement end: 2009-06-15

collection environment: The experiment was conducted on a shopping mall, which has a surface area of 10,880 square meters (without considering the parking area). 17 mobile devices were given to shopkeepers, and 8 devices were static, placed in fixed locations. The devices were deployed in 1 store, 11 shops, and 1 bar.

network configuration: The devices used to collect data in this experiment are smart phones running symbianOS and using Bluetooth technology.

data collection methodology: For six days the devices were all collecting data from around 9:15 a.m. to around 8:45 p.m. 4 of the sellers closed their shops between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., left shops, and went home. These were asked to leave the smart phones in their shops and carry them on themselves when they came back to work.

  • description: This is a traceset of real-world Bluetooth contact data colected from shop employees of a shopping mall over six days.
  • measurement purpose: User Mobility Characterizationj, Routing Protocol for DTNs (Disruption Tolerant Networks), Opportunistic Connectivity
  • methodology: We carried out neighbor discovery approximately every 120 seconds and logged the results. The Bluetooth 1.1 specification states that inquiry process for neighbor discovery should last about ten seconds. Clock synchronization was carried out manually.

  • bluetooth: This is a traceset of real-world Bluetooth contact data collected from shop employees of a shopping mall over six days.

    • configuration: We carried out neighbor discovery approximately every 120 seconds and logged the results. Clock synchronization was carried out manually.
    • format: There is a log corresponding to each smart phone. The format of each line is: scan time, the phone's MAC address, and all detected MAC addresses. The time is in seconds and starts at midnight of the first day of data collection. A few phones had time set in a different time zone, one hour faster, so these logs start after 10 a.m., or 36000 seconds, and need to be synchronized an hour back.

About CRAWDAD: the Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data At Dartmouth is a data resource for the research community interested in wireless networks and mobile computing. CRAWDAD was founded at Dartmouth College in 2004, led by Tristan Henderson, David Kotz, and Chris McDonald. CRAWDAD datasets are hosted by IEEE DataPort as of November 2022.

These datasets are part of Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data (CRAWDAD). CRAWDAD began in 2004 at Dartmouth College as a place to share wireless network data with the research community. Its purpose was to enable access to data from real networks and real mobile users at a time when collecting such data was challenging and expensive. The archive has continued to grow since its inception, and starting in summer 2022 is being housed on IEEE DataPort.
