Creating a Data Management Plan

What is a Data Management Plan?

A data management plan or DMP is a formal document that outlines how data are to be handled both during a research project, and after the project is completed. The goal of a data management plan is to consider the many aspects of data management, metadata generation, data preservation, and analysis before the project begins; this may lead to data being well-managed in the present, and prepared for preservation in the future (wikipedia).

Why would I need a Data Management Plan?

Data Management Plans are increasingy required to receive funding from government, foundations, and NGOs.

How Can I Create a Data Management Plan?

All IEEE DataPort logged in users can currently create a Data Management Plan (DMP) on IEEE DataPort during the pilot phase of this new feature.  Please check with your funding source on any specific requirements for your DMP before you submit your plan. You can see a sample Data Managemetn Plan here.

Getting Started

  1. Login to IEEE DataPort using your IEEE account.

  2. Navigate to your account by clicking My Account in the upper right of the screen.

  3. Click the 'Create Data Management Plan' button.

Entering your DMP

  1. Enter the following fields:
    1. Project Authors* - include authors in the anticiapted citation order including first name, last name, affiliation, and optional ORCID.
    2. Project Title* - Please enter an appropriate title for the project, proposal, or paper connected with your dataset.
    3. Project Duration* (e.g. 1 year)
    4. Dataset License* - Enter the License title and link. IEEE DataPort are assigned the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license by default. Alternate licenses are available upon request.
    5. Dataset Size* - Anticipated file size or range of sizes of all dataset files to be stored on IEEE DataPort (e.g. 100MB, 100GB, 1TB, 1-2TB)
    6. Cost of Data Retention and Accessibility* - Indicate the anticipated cost of your data retention and accessibility including the applicable currency symbol (e.g. $1950).
    7. External links - enter any links that should appear on your DMP
    8. Project Description* - Please include a description of your project. This may include project background, purpose, topic, and scope. Please use the formatting controls to create headings, bullets, etc.
    9. Original Data Description - Describe the original data your project will generate, measure, or collect. If possible, describe the planned process, frequency, and methodology.
    10. Processed Data Description - If applicable, please describe the processed data planned for your project including any data analysis, visualizations, and scripts to be included with your dataset submission.
    11. Additional Description - Please provide any additional detail, descriptions, or content needed for your data management plan.
  2. Click the 'Save Data Management Plan' to submit your DMP
  3. Review your DMP and use the 'Edit' tab to make any necessary changes or updates.
  4. Click the 'Print Data Management Plan' to print or create PDF of your DMP.
